What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition in which the body has a lack of effective insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas. Insulin helps the body turn the sugar in food into energy. Individuals with diabetes either do not make insulin or are unable to use the insulin that their body makes.

Type 1 diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction that stops the body from making insulin.

Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is when the body is unable to use the insulin it makes (insulin resistance). Eventually the body does not make enough insulin (insulin deficiency).

Gestational diabetes: Gestational diabetes is when women develop insulin resistance during pregnancy.
