CPAP Mask Leaks, Marks & Comfort Fixes

Quick Answer

Most leaks come from a worn cushion, oily skin, or a mask that’s too tight or the wrong size. Wash your face and cushion, refit while lying down with the machine on, and replace cushions on schedule.

Fit it right

  1. Put the mask on and adjust it while lying in your sleep position with the machine running — fit changes when you lie down.
  2. Loosen rather than tighten: an overtightened mask folds the cushion and causes more leaks and red marks.
  3. Use your mask’s fitting guide to confirm the size; weight change or a new cushion can change your size.

Keep it clean

  1. Wash your face before bed to remove oils and lotions.
  2. Wipe or wash the cushion daily with mild soap and water and let it air dry.
  3. Cushions and pillows wear out — a leak that keeps getting worse usually means it’s time for a replacement.

Dry mouth or nose

  1. Waking with a dry mouth can mean mouth breathing with a nasal mask — a full-face mask or chin strap may help; ask your prescriber.
  2. Turn up humidification or use heated tubing if your machine supports it.
